Thousands of Travelers Stranded in US as United, Delta, American, Southwest, Spirit and Other Airlines Cancel 145 and Delay 2,774 New Flights at New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle and More

Thousands of travelers across the United States are facing significant travel disruptions today as United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest, Spirit, and several other airlines grapple with 145 flight cancellations and 2,774 delays. Major airports in New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, and other cities are seeing the brunt of these delays. Passengers in these locations are dealing with long waits, frustrating delays, and unexpected cancellations. Weather-related issues, including snow, ice, and low visibility, are major contributing factors to these disruptions.

As airlines scramble to manage operations, travelers are advised to stay informed about their flight status and explore rebooking options. Many flights are being rescheduled, causing ripple effects across various routes. For those affected, patience is key, as these disruptions are likely to continue throughout the day.

Weather continues to play a major role in disrupting travel today. From deicing procedures to ground delays caused by snow, ice, and low visibility, several airports are experiencing substantial delays.

Other airports such as Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) are reporting moderate disruptions, with 5 cancellations and 196 delays at O’Hare, and 2 cancellations with 70 delays at DFW. On the West Coast, San Francisco International (SFO) and Los Angeles International (LAX) also have delays, with 49 at SFO and 66 at LAX. Southwest Florida International (RSW) and Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) are experiencing delays as well, exacerbated by low visibility and compacted demand. The weather and operational delays are causing widespread impacts, making it important for travelers to stay updated on their flight statuses.

Several airports are dealing with deicing procedures due to icy conditions. This includes airports like Albany International (ALB), Burlington International (BTV), Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT), Providence T.F. Green International (PVD), and Southwest Florida International (RSW). The need to deice aircraft, although crucial for safety, is leading to delays as planes are prepared for departure.

Boston Logan International (BOS) and Newark Liberty International (EWR) are particularly impacted by ground delays due to snow, ice, and wind. Passengers traveling from these airports can expect delays averaging over 200 minutes in some cases. Washington Dulles International (IAD) has even implemented a ground stop due to high winds, further contributing to the disruption.

Reagan National (DCA) is also facing a ground delay due to other factors, but this has led to relatively shorter delays averaging 40 minutes.

Across major US airlines, the following disruptions have been noted:

The weather disruptions, especially deicing and wind-related delays, have impacted major travel hubs on the East Coast, including Boston, New York (Newark and LaGuardia), Washington D.C., and Florida. With airlines like United, Delta, and American Airlines being major players in these regions, the disruption extends across multiple routes, affecting both domestic and international travelers. In addition to this, Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines are also grappling with cancellations and delays, which further strains air travel during this busy period.

For passengers experiencing delays or cancellations, it is crucial to stay in touch with airlines for updated information on flight statuses and options. Many airlines are offering rebooking services for affected passengers. Here are a few steps passengers can take:

As 2,774 delays and 145 cancellations ripple through US airports, travelers are urged to remain flexible and patient. Weather remains the primary cause of disruptions, but operational delays and other factors are also contributing to the chaos. For those impacted, proactive communication with airlines, rebooking efforts, and awareness of passenger rights can help mitigate the frustration of today’s travel challenges.
